TenFourKit is the only WebKit web browser for Tiger that still receives regular updates and is enclosed in the skin of Safari 4.1.3. Unfortunately, Leopard WebKit (as the name implies) only runs on Leopard. It’s a fantastic effort to keep Safari healthy after Apple’s withdrawal of support from PowerPC. Leopard WebKit is essencially the latest WebKit code (the backbone of Safari and Google’s Chrome) in the skin of Safari 5.0.6. Hands down these are the best browsers for PowerPC Macintoshes.

  • It’s an open-source office suite that is much less CPU intensive than OpenOffice.

    In spite of this, if you’re short on cash and looking for a word processor for free, check out Bean (Leopard users click-> 3.09) (Tiger users click-> 2.45). Many times, we would find random things formatted incorrectly after moving the file to a computer with Microsoft Office…which can be quite irritating. It’s not that we think they are bad programs, but we’ve often ran into problems when opening an OpenOffice file that was supposedly compatible with Microsoft Office. Some people are big fans of using OpenOffice (among other open source word processors), but we’ve never been a fan of them. If you feel it’s running too slowly, give an earlier version a try…but it’s unlikely that’ll happen. iWork ’09 has support for all G5 Macintoshes.     Also, Leopard has much more up to date software support compared to Tiger, which is quickly becoming (if not already) abandoned by most software providers. Every G5 processor has more than enough power to run Leopard. Otherwise, we see no reason to run anything other than Leopard on a G5. Leopard doesn’t run ANY OS 9 applications, so stick with Tiger if you need to run OS 9 applications. Operating System: OS 10.5 “ Leopard” or OS 10.4 “ Tiger.” To be quite honest, we see no reason to run Tiger unless you explicitly prefer it or have software needs that require it (like the Classic Environment).Here’s our recommendations for Macintosh users with PowerPC G5 Processors:
